Author Q & A

Why did you begin the book with such an unconventional opening?

1

Modern leadership requires just as much humility and emotional intelligence as it does positional authority and technical ability. I wanted the opening to reflect this—immediately signaling that the book will be about far more than just skill or title.

I also believe that while leadership is a serious topic, it could use more lightheartedness.

Why did you choose to use allegory as the framework for the book?

2

Because allegory is fiction, readers have the freedom to let go of preconceived notions and consider ideas that might otherwise be overlooked or dismissed.

The use of symbolic metaphor in allegory also requires active engagement. Instead of being told what to think, readers are invited to use abstract thought to interpret nuanced meaning. This process deepens understanding.

Finally, allegory is memorable. A well-crafted allegorical story is far more likely to stay with you than a boring list of principles!

Why this particular allegory?

3

This particular allegorical story distills leadership down to two deceptively simple principles—principles that may seem obvious at first glance but will fundamentally change how you lead once you fully understand them.

And because the story is only 161 words, it does this succinctly and powerfully.

Were you concerned that using the concept of alchemy might undermine credibility?

Not at all. In fact, it serves two important purposes.

First, using the concept of alchemy immediately establishes that the story isn’t literal, it’s symbolic. This invites the reader to move beyond superficial thought—exactly the kind of analysis that advanced leadership requires.

Second, while alchemy was once considered to be a superstitious “fool’s errand,” modern science has now been able to achieve the transformation of lead into gold. There are several lessons here. One of them is that ideas which seem impossible at first often become achievable when the right approach is applied. Leadership is no different.

What makes this book stand out in a crowded field of leadership titles?

5

Several things.

First, its use of metaphor. Very few leadership books use metaphor. And of those that do, I haven’t seen one use a metaphor that speaks to the essence of leadership as succinctly and profoundly as this one does.

Second, it bridges a common gap. Many leadership books either inspire without guiding action or provide tools without meaning. This book is designed to do both—so readers feel motivated to make a difference and know how to do it.

Third, the book specifically focuses on the art of relentlessly driving performance while also cultivating engagement. Most leadership books either ignore this balance or focus on one aspect over the other. This book thoroughly explores each of these concepts separately and then provides a roadmap for combining them in an approach that simultaneously elevates performance and people.

Fourth, my background in behavioral science, clinical medicine, and executive leadership gives the book a unique voice. The combination of a systematic exploration of leadership principles, personal stories from my leadership journey, practical tools and techniques, and structured self-reflection sections provides a perspective that is grounded in academics, informed by real-world experience, and directly applicable on Monday morning!

Is there anything else you want to share about that book which might not be obvious?

6

The best leaders don’t leave fingerprints or footprints behind. They do their work without leaving a trace—their sole intent being to empower others. In general, the book was intentional in providing the pertinent pieces of the puzzle and putting most of them together but ALSO giving the reader space to do the rest themselves. More specifically, there are several things that I was deliberate about not saying. Some of these pertain to nuances of the themes I discussed. Others relate to meta-lessons that the book implies but does not explicitly state.

Just like the exercise of analyzing the symbology in the story of alchemy, there are layers of depth in the book that will only reveal themselves as readers think critically about the material.
